Take a bow, Dov Charney. Take a bow.

May 21, 2008

Not only is Dov Charney the founder and CEO of American Apparel but he’s also the virtuoso behind these ads–shooting them himself and even writing the copy!

Also–Terry Richardson: stop being Terry Richardson.

I’m not a prude, these images are damaging. He just loves taking disgusting pictures of prepubescent boys and girls. Anyone who likes him or his work is a pervert!

I love the self righteous and puritanical people of this country (U.S.A.) who wave their egocentric indignation around like a flaming cross.

Dutifully it seems, they make their banal attempts to impale it (ablaze with their moral interpretude) through the heart of everything they interpret as yet just another monolithic monument to the degeneration of society and a potential antagonist in unhinging of their repressed sexuality.

What they deem to be sleaze and “disgusting” is more often than not, just a glimpse and glimmer into their own cursed souls!

Ha, I often imagine that they delusionally perceive their incensed moral outrage to be not unlike a window that has finally been opened in a place such as a pool hall, or bar. A place where the air is seething thick with the scent of sweat and desire. The scents of LIFE!

It appears that the physical body is what incites these creatures the most. Whether it be an innocent image taken by Sally Mann, or Jock Sturge, or a beautiful ancient Greek statuette of an unclothed maiden, they are always incapable of seeing the beauty that can only be viewed within innocent eyes.

Meanwhile they and the country are plagued with far more divisive and damaging vices! Like greed, envy, gluttony and most of all pride.

They are the members of a church of fat, judgmental, alcoholic bigots, who all wave their fingers in scorn at those outside of their pretentious glass house. At those who are enjoying and appreciating the physical beauty of the reality we have been cast into.

“Let them eat cake,” I say.
Preferably one that’s been molded into the shape of a huge pair of breasts, or buttocks better yet!

In the words of the late, great Arthur Godfrey,

    “HA! Whadda’ bunch a SAPS!”

Whatever your views are on sex and morals, this is cheap. Sex sells, a monkey will know that, any idiot could come up with this kind of crap. He even wrote the copy? Big deal!…

Sexy images, no doubt, but far from “virtuoso”…

Anyone can sell products to kids with pornography. A bow to “Dov Charney” and a bow to laissez-faire capitalism.

I have no problem with admiring the female body, or male for that matter, in appropriate contexts (e.g. art galleries, the bedroom etc.), but if I’m invited to do so with a product jammed between the girl’s tits and a logo stamped on her thigh, I can only wonder why the company needs to resort to such stark, base sales tactics to gets its goods off the shelf.

P.S. I’m a British liberal atheist and classicist (and thus study the Ancient Greeks who were, by and large, far from a model society for the 21st century), so your (pretty judgemental and presumptive) argument doesn’t have any relevance in relation to myself, I’m afraid, Mr. Damage.
